El Rio Broadway Clinic at 1101 E. Broadway is El Rio’s Healthcare for the Homeless clinic and also serves patients with serious mental illnesses. Patients are able to access primary care and needed resources in a convenient and comfortable environment. A clinical staff consisting of 4 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and care coordinators provides the primary medical care. Referrals are made to local behavioral and substance abuse services as needed.

In addition, The El Rio medical outreach teams provide care to people experiencing homelessness in a mobile medical van, the Van of Hope, and at 7 locations across Tucson, including men’s and women’s shelters, churches, and soup kitchens. In 2010, the El Rio medical outreach team provided care to 550 individuals totaling 1060 encounters.

Linkages

Enrollment in the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (Medicaid) is provided by Continuity of Care Coordinators onsite. Emergency care and hospitalization are available at local hospitals throughout town, but primarily at St. Mary’s Hospital. Dental services are provided by El Rio Dental clinicians. Referrals are made to the local regional behavioral health authority, CPSA. The project staff also participates in semi-annual events in Pima County like the Veteran’s Stand Down, HOPEFest, and Tucson Homeless Connect, providing blood pressure and glucose screenings to attendees. El Rio is a member of the Tucson Pima Collaboration to End Homelessness, and part of the 51 Homes Campaign, a collaborative, community effort to house the most medically-vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness in the greater Tucson area. 51homes is the local chapter of the national 100,000 Homes Campaign that is lead by Community Solutions of New York.
