The National HCH Council has released a new resource exploring how use of the ICD-10-CM code for homelessness (Z59.0) can help provide the data necessary to document homelessness and inform clinical and financial decisions. People without homes have disproportionately high rates of disease and behavioral health conditions, and health care institutions are increasingly recognizing the risk factor of housing status. However, better data is needed to identify individuals who are homeless and help justify funding additional services that will improve patients’ health status. To help address that gap, this policy brief provides a rationale for using the Z59.0 code for homelessness and strategies for overcoming challenges while ensuring that providers ask about homelessness and record patients’ housing status.
