October 1 begins the open enrollment process for millions of Americans who will be newly eligible for insurance benefits that start on January 1 of next year. Among those newly eligible for insurance coverage are people experiencing homelessness, many of whom are currently uninsured. The ACA changes that, closing a long-standing gap in Medicaid eligibility that has prevented people living on the streets, in shelters and those doubled up with family and friends from accessing comprehensive health care. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council celebrates the potential the ACA has to make significant improvements in the lives of our poorest and most vulnerable neighbors.
