Detroit Observes Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day

Reginald O. Hamilton - Detroit, Michigan, Co-ChairNational Consumer Advisory Board member Reginald Hamilton and Advantage Health Centers/Detroit Health Care for the Homeless observed the city’s 23rd Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day at Waller Health Center on Cathedral Green on December 21, 2012. Hamilton served on the Planning Committee and helped successfully market the event, which saw several community groups provided food, blankets, clothes, and hygiene kits.

Sheilah Clay, CEO of Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO), was the main speaker for this event. Often a collaborator with Advantage Health Centers, NSO has served homeless and disadvantaged persons in Detroit with a 24-hour walk-in facility, and HPMD attendees were inspired to hear that NSO had raised millions of dollars to renovate an apartment building to provide permanent housing for homeless persons.

After Clay’s speech, candles were lit as a list of the past year’s deceased was read. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen Choir provided music for the program and the holiday dinner that followed.
