NUTRITION SOURCES FOR SHELTERS
The Child and Adult Care Food Program, a federal entitlement, is an underutilized resource for feeding children and youth in homeless, runaway and domestic violence shelters and some transitional housing. Congress extended food program eligibility for children and youth in shelters from 13 years of age to up to 18 years of age. Shelters can receive up to $5.70 per day for each participant served. For example, shelters serving meals to 20 children and youth each day could be eligible to receive up to $41,000 a year in food program reimbursements. The Food Research and Action Center's Outreach Toolkit, includes state agency contacts and outreach materials.
