Advocacy
Advocacy is essential to the mission of preventing and ending homelessness and is incorporated throughout the National Health Care for the Homeless Conference and Policy Symposium. Experts from Health Care for the Homeless projects, advocacy organizations, and our partnering government agencies will discuss the changes underway from the Affordable Care Act, other policies impacting local projects, and ways to advocate and organize to help prevent and end homelessness. Formal presentations and workshops will complement the informal networking opportunities provided by the hundreds of service providers, consumers, and advocates expected to attend. Policy and advocacy highlights at this year’s conference include:
- Pre-conference Institute on local advocacy strategies
- Plenary session on the Medicaid Expansion in 2014
- Government officials from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Health Resources and Services Administration, the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, and other agencies
- Updates on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act and what you need to know for your community
- Over a dozen policy and advocacy workshops
- Rally for human rights Thursday evening
The implementation of the Affordable Care Act and the potential changes following the Presidential Election make this year one of the most important times to build the capacity to engage in policy advocacy. Decisions made in the coming months at the local, state, and federal levels will impact our work and the people we serve for years to come. Learn needed skills at the Conference and use your unique experiences as service providers and consumers to ensure the policy decisions made in your community account for the needs of the most vulnerable.
Please visit the policy and advocacy page for more information about Council policy and advocacy priorities.
Conference Ethos
The National Health Care for the Homeless Conference and Policy Symposium is committed to increased access to food, housing, and health care. Through Harvesters Community Food Network, a Food Rescue Program will deliver leftover prepared food from the conference. Harvesters is Kansas City’s only food bank and for over 25 years has been fighting hunger in the community. Through a network of more than 550 non-profit agencies in 13 counties in Missouri and Kansas they feed nearly 60,000 people every week.
The conference also seeks to be sustainable by offering electronic news updates via Twitter, and by distributing electronic conference programs for laptops, iPads®, and mobile devices.
