The Health Care of Homeless Persons
A Manual of Communicable Diseases & Common Problems in Shelters & on the Streets

The National Health Care for the Homeless Council proudly announces the publication of a major new resource for all of those who are concerned about the health of people experiencing homelessness.

This lavishly illustrated, 384-page manual describes serious health problems that commonly afflict homeless persons and discusses appropriate responses and treatment. The manual addresses communicable disease control and food handling in shelter settings, and current approaches to the management of chronic diseases. It includes convenient patient education materials in English and Spanish that can be easily reproduced and given to shelter guests and staff.
The Health Care of Homeless Persons will prove useful in:
  • providing health care day-to-day, as a practical reference book
  • teaching homeless people about their conditions and how to care for themselves
  • training students in health professions
  • orienting new HCH providers of all disciplines
  • educating shelter providers, outreach workers and others who work with homeless persons
  • informing community partners about the grave health problems associated with homelessness
We encourage broad distribution of this significant new resource, especially among the staff of HCH programs, other health care providers who serve poor and homeless populations, and emergency shelter and housing program staff and volunteers. To that end, the manual is priced very affordably at $15 per copy.
