Abstract
This publication is designed for clinicians, policymakers, administrators and people of influence at the community, county, State, regional and national levels. It features a comprehensive definition of cultural competence that focuses on organizational, provider, and community systems and socioeconomic, epidemiologic and outcome perspectives. It describes a sampling of experiences of community programs, supported through the Health Resources and Services Administrations’ Bureau of Primary Health Care, providing services to culturally and linguistically diverse populations. It describes some of the successes and challenges all to serve diverse consumers in a new way. Some suggestions of resources for expanding organizational and clinical cultural competence are provided.
