In communities throughout the country, innovative health care agencies are providing temporary housing and cost-effective medical care for homeless people who are too ill to remain on the streets, but not ill enough to be in a hospital. These providers offer services in many ways, from shelter-based programs to free-standing facilities. Other cities provide their services through apartment-based models, nursing facility models, and more. They all share at least one commonality: a passionate commitment to meeting the needs of homeless people who are ill. Watch the new medical respite video - click the image below Filmed by documentarian, John Baynard of the World Witness Project, this short video describes medical respite care from the perspective of consumers, health care for the homeless clinicians, and a physician from a hospital emergency department. Providers and advocates are encouraged to share the video with potential funders, partners, and policymakers. Medical Respite Services for Homeless People: Practical Planning June 2009 This monograph is an updated and revised edition of the 1999 monograph, Medical Respite Services for Homeless People: Practical Models. This new edition offers an introduction to medical respite care and offers practical guidance for program planning. The publication is intended to encourage and assist hospital and health center administrators as well as other homeless service providers in developing a medical respite program in their community.
