HCH 101: Back By Popular Demand

Clinicians attending the national HCH conference once again flocked to HCH 101. Over 25 individuals from a wide range of clinical disciplines enrolled, and several more were turned away at the door for lack of space. Designed and taught by members of the Network Education Committee, this workshop is a practical introduction to health care for the homeless, which practitioners new to the field find particularly helpful.

Laura Gillis, MSN, (Baltimore) gave an overview of the incidence and causes of homelessness in the United States. Karen Holman, MD, MPH, (Oklahoma City) briefly explained the inter-disciplinary model of care recommended for managing complex, medical-psychosocial conditions characteristic of homeless persons. Patrice Morhart, MSW, (Los Angeles) served as lead facilitator for subsequent small group discussions focused on a case study.

The course has been offered at national and regional meetings across the United States. Those interested in replicating the experience for local clinicians should contact Brenda Proffitt, Network Project Director, for more information.
