Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) 101 Online – Schedule-Based Version

Sponsorship Statement Jointly Sponsored by Vanderbilt School of Medicine and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council

Accreditation This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for CME (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Vanderbilt School of Medicine and the National Health Care for the Homeless Council. Vanderbilt School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for CME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

This continuing nursing education activity is being reviewed for approval by the Tennessee Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This program is being reviewed for approval by the National Association of Social Workers (provider # 886497299) for seven continuing education contact hours.

Vanderbilt School of Medicine is reviweing this educational activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

PurposeIn the late 1980s, a group of clinicians and service providers demonstrated particular ways of providing health care to people experiencing homelessness. This model of care, now known as the HCH Model, helps alleviate suffering and support recovery of people experiencing homelessness. It is a model of care that, while not taught in most health professions schools, has demonstrated success in the care for and recovery of people experiencing homelessness. This interactive course, designed by HCH providers, introduces students to the realities of homelessness, the HCH model of care, and the large community of HCH consumers, advocates, and providers.

Objectives

Participate in online learning environment
Describe root causes, experiences, and definitions of homelessness
Summarize the history of the HCH program and governmental agencies that fund and provide oversight for those programs
List specific characteristics of the HCH Model of Care
Identify resources and potential collaborations in your community to assist people experiencing homelessness
Identify ways to address common causes of stress in homeless services to support self and team care
List membership organizations, networking opportunities, and continuing education options available for the HCH community
Evaluate HCH 101 online training

Is there a registration fee? No
What is the course schedule? The course is designed for students to view and discuss content together over a ten-day time period.

Through HRSA funding, the Council is able to offer this moderated, accredited course for free at least once every month. Registration for this schedule-based course is limited to 15 students per month. Click below to register for the next available course. Target Audience This learning activity is designed for clinic and shelter staff, health professions students, federal employees, and volunteers new to Health Care for the Homeless. The course is designed to promote collaboration among learners of different disciplines, backgrounds and geographical locations.
