Health Care for the Homeless 101

Designed for new HCH staff, this interactive workshop uses presentations, panels, and small group discussion to examine realities of homelessness; relationships between lack of housing and poor health; the history of the HCH Program; HCH philosophy of care; the relationship between service and advocacy in HCH; and opportunities for networking and peer support. Participants are led by experienced HCH consumers, clinicians, and administrators to both examine and add to their own knowledge about HCH while learning more about their colleagues in the larger HCH field. Introductory level.

Providing Training: Skills That Work
Do you have a desire to develop knowledge and skills as a training facilitator? Training for people providing homeless services and advocacy is needed to ensure people stay informed and motivated. In this interactive Pre-Conference Institute, participants will explore theories on how people learn, identify training resources to adapt for their own use, name effective strategies and activities to engage participants, and practice using skills that work. Intermediate to advanced level.

Creating Healthy Organizations: Innovative Leadership in Homeless Services
This workshop creates an interactive peer-to-peer learning environment in which leaders of homeless service agencies can learn from one another and wrestle with issues related to homeless services. The training covers topics such as core purpose and values, strategic thinking, recruitment and retention, fostering teamwork, leaders as advocates for their cause, characteristics of healthy organizations, and self-care for leaders and staff. Introductory to intermediate level.

Respite Care: Yes, We Can
The first part of this Pre-Conference Institute will offer participants compelling stories and practical approaches to developing and providing medical respite care. During the second part of the Institute, participants will learn how to make the case for respite using current respite research. Participants will also hear from a representative of a large hospital association and officials from federal agencies about ways to build and maintain support for medical respite programs. Intermediate level.

An Advocate’s Policy Forum and Congressional Visit
Make the most of your time in Washington by learning first-hand about advocacy on the Hill. This Institute will introduce the National Health Care for the Homeless’ policy priorities and provide a basic advocacy training. We’ll then embark on a walking tour of Capitol Hill and culminate with a Congressional briefing and visits to representatives. Introductory to intermediate level.

Pre-Conference Institute attendance is not included in conference registration and requires an additional fee of $75 ($125 after May 15), which covers materials, continental breakfast, refreshments during breaks, and continuing education credits. Register here for a Pre-Conference Institute. Due to space limitations, no on-site registration for Pre-Conference Institutes will be available.
