From its beginnings in the early 1980's, Health Care for the Homeless has developed and refined unique approaches to overcoming barriers to care faced by people without homes, and to delivering effective care. HCH 101 will introduce newcomers to the basic concepts, structures, and approaches employed in HCH. Introductory level .

Respite Care and Hospitals: A Perfect Fit?

pre-conference HCH providers have recognized a critical need to provide specialized shelter with health services for homeless people with particular medical vulnerabilities, such as those needing to recuperate after hospital discharge. Providers of such care have organized as the Respite Care Providers' Network within the National HCH Council. This Institute will focus on relationships between Respite programs and hospitals. Workshops on Respite will be also conducted during the Conference. Introductory and Advanced levels.

Training in Motivational Interviewing

motivationalMotivational interviewing is a client-centered, evidence-based counseling approach that prepares people for change by helping them resolve ambivalence, enhance intrinsic motivation, and build confidence to change their behavior. This training is relevant for clinicians of all disciplines. Participants will learn about the spirit, principles, and core skills of motivational interviewing, and will practice incorporating these skills into their work.

Carol Hall Consumer Involvement in Homeless Programs

In HCH projects and other homeless service and advocacy agencies, people who have endured homelessness are recognized as having unique skills and perspectives, and are deliberately included as service providers, administrative staff, outreach workers, volunteers, and Board members. This Institute will explore ways to make the most of such consumer participation. Members of the HCH National Consumer Advisory Board and the Homelessness Resource Center operated by the Institute on Homelessness and Trauma, with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), will jointly present this Institute.
